2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference

From October 31 to November 12, world leaders are gathered in Glasgow, Scotland to attend the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (also known as COP26). This conference had been postponed for a year due to pandemic travel restrictions.

In 2015, countries attending COP21 adopted the Paris Agreement, an international treaty on climate change. These countries agreed to reduce global warming to 1.5 degrees celsius. This was the first binding international agreement regarding climate change.

They also agreed to reconvene every five years to update their plan to tackle carbon emissions. COP26 is the year to update this plan.

As COP26 meets, thousands of people have been gathering for climate protests around the world. Teen climate activist, Greta Thunberg, spoke out in front of a crowd in Glasgow. She demanded significant reductions in emissions.
